2008 Summer Law Clerk Positions Available at the

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
The Center for WorkLife Law (WLL) is a nonprofit research and advocacy organization based at U.C. Hastings College of the Law that seeks to eliminate employment discrimination against mothers and others with family caregiving responsibilities. WorkLife Law works with a variety of stakeholders to identify and eliminate family responsibilities discrimination by:
• assisting caregivers who may be experiencing discrimination at work;
• working with employers to identify and prevent discriminatory practices;
• providing technical guidance to state and federal policymakers who seek to develop public policies to prevent caregiver discrimination;
• providing technical guidance to lawyers who advise employers on how to avoid employment discrimination, and to lawyers who represent employees who believe they have been discriminated against; and
• working with the press to document common challenges facing caregivers, and to highlight employers and policies that have successfully overcome such challenges.
WLL also runs the Project for Attorney Retention (PAR), an initiative that works to stem unwanted attrition among lawyers by promoting work/life balance and the advancement of women in the legal profession. For more information, see www.worklifelaw.org and www.pardc.org.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of and reporting to the Director and the Associate Director of WLL, the Law Clerk is responsible for assisting in the work of WLL and PAR. Duties include:
• conducting legal research and writing on topics related to WLL’s work, including in the substantive areas of employment discrimination, labor law, and the legal profession;
• assisting WLL staff with their research and writing of articles and reports;
• helping develop public education and training materials for WLL’s website and presentations;
• helping develop WLL’s research databases of family responsibilities discrimination cases and union arbitrations involving work/family conflict; and
• performing other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Open to first-, second-, and third- year law students, with a strong preference for students who have taken a course on employment discrimination. Students must be proficient in traditional and electronic forms of legal research; have excellent research and writing skills; be able to communicate the results of their research clearly both orally and in writing; and have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Full-time summer commitment preferred (40 hours per week for 10 weeks), but part-time considered. Flexible schedules available. Pay competitive with similar public interest opportunities.
