Fifteen Things You Didn’t Know About Ms. JD Board Member Courtney Gabbara

1. I love everything Michigan (the state, not the school)! Seriously, I am a diehard Michigander. When you ask me where I'm from, I will not hesitate to bring out my map of Michigan (my right hand) and show you.  The history alone should be enough to sell people (Motown, Motor City, the Spirit of Detroit), not to mention the gorgeous seasons, the apple picking, the lakes, and the people!

2. In my lifetime, I have earned myself over 25 nicknames, almost all of which have stuck. Cabba Gabba is currently my favorite and has been used by classmates, professors, and professionals alike.

3. At the age of 3, I was bit on the ankle by a poisoness spider.  How still remains a mystery.  Today, the only proof we have is the scar and the doctor's bill.

4. Flying to the Ms. JD annual conference in Los Angeles in April of 2011 was my first time on an airplane in 15 years! Considering how amzing it has been to be a member of such an incredible organization, I can't imagine what my life would be like if  I had not gotten on that plane! Since this conference, I have been on over 25 flights.

5. Although I used to love to run in high school, it became an activity that took a back seat to all of my other interests when college started.  However, my friends and I have started a new tradition of running the Warrior Dash each summer.  This was our second summer in a row, but we are hoping to upgrade to Tough Mudder soon.

6. While on my lunch break for my summer law clerk position at the Federal Public Defender's Office in the Western District of Michigan, I met Aziz Ansari in a coffee shop.  Instead of saying something cool and witty, all I could manage to blurt out was "Mr. Ansari, I loved you as the host of the MTV Movie Awards this summer." He smiled and autographed my work padfolio.  Winning!

7. For those who know me, they know that I like to talk (a lot--although, I will add in my defense that I am also a good listener and am always ready with a listening ear for those in need). When I was 5 or 6 years old, I loved watching TV with my dad.  The only problem was that I would never stop talking. To remedy this, my dad talked me into believing that I was a robot who had a battery pack.  Whenever I would get too chatty during his TV time, he would poke me in the right shoulder and tell me he had to take out my battery pack, meaning I couldn't talk until he put it back in.

8. Similar to Katie Larkin-Wong, my first "job" was in my dad's gift shop when I was 6 years old.  I was the official duster and candy organizer.

9. Michigan State University is my home away from home. Period.

10. I've slept with the same pillow every night basically since I was moved from the crib.  It is my equivalent of the stuffed animal. It is "blue" and people think it looks like it needs to be thrown out, but I have yet to find a better pillow.

11. If I hadn't gone to law school, I would like to believe I would have gone on to get my Ph.D in Clinical Psychology.

12. I am addicted to pinterest (I've gone on it 5 times since I started writing this).

13. Although sometimes it is easier said than done, I truly believe it is important not to take yourself too seriously.  I work hard and expect the same from others, but at the end of the day, I believe people need to compartmentalize and just enjoy themselves.

14. I'm a helpless romantic who cries at every tragic love story put on paper, on film, and on TV.  One day, I would love to visit the Lover's Bridge in Paris.  Come on! How does your heart not melt for this?

15. I believe the best accessory a person can have is a smile and a good attitude.  Laughing can cure almost anything.
