Irresponsibility, according to Obama

My dad sent me a text message tonight. And here's the conversation:

Dad: did you just hear Obama call you irresponsible?

Me: Eh?

Dad: For not getting your child health care

Dad: Debate

Dad: Cnn

Me: ah! no cnn, glad to hear I'm irresponsible

Dad: he is just too high and almighty for me

This is an especially interesting comment coming from my dad, because I have rarely heard my dad speak of his political views. We have political debates at the house among my many siblings, however he typically doesn't join in. He votes, but doesn't say who he votes for.

Here's my story on my daughter's lack of health care...

I'm a law student, which as ya'll well know means no money. I applied for and received several government benefits after much arguing and tears with the Health and Human Services caseworker, who decided that because I was voluntarily not working, I should not qualify for any services. I informed her I work very hard, just don't get paid for it yet. Anyway, my daughter had been approved for medicaid for 6 months. At the time, she was also covered by her father's insurance. Both expired at the end of January.

I received renewal paperwork for both Foodstamps and Medicaid in December during finals, filled them out, gathered the 50 pages of documentation required, and mailed it all in on January 7th. The state received it January 10th. It was due January 31 to continue benefits. I was set for a renewal interview for February 12th, because they were unable to get to me sooner. My interview had been scheduled during a class, so I called about two weeks prior (mid-january) to reschedule. After 20 minutes, many tears, and elevation to a supervisor because the first guy was so unhelpful, I was rescheduled for the first available time that I was not also in class, February 27th. They gave me about 3 time slots to pick from, and at one point told me just to reappl, which would have delayed things further and required another 15 page application with another 50 pages of documentation.

Her coverage ended January 31st and I was notified February 15th. I received the certificate of continuous coverage last weekend, and called in Wednesday to find out what was going on.

So there's the back-story. When I spoke to the customer "care" woman, who was very nice, she advised that since I had used a single form to respond to the two programs (the applications are identical and require the same documentation) rather than filling out the application twice and mailing in two sets of paperwork, my child's medicaid expired and would not be reinstated until the interview, which I already know I can't get any sooner.

Right now, I'm praying that she stays healthy and no issues arise between now and next Wednesday. As I told the woman, if an issue does arise, I promise to raise holy h*** since my application was received well in advance of the due date and nothing I could have done would have sped up the process or obtained me an interview prior to the expiration of the medicaid. I do plan to and expect that her coverage will be back-dated to cover the lapse period. I'll let you know if I'm successful.

So there is why I'm irresponsible, according to Obama.

I'm voting for Hillary
