What would you do: conflicts in a small firm
Posted September 1st, 2008 by bangalee57I worked this summer for a small firm with many great people, except for one staff person. The partners offered me a spring position following a judicial internship. I gratefully thanked them for the opportunity and would be excited to go back to the firm, but I feel really uncomfortable working with this woman, who is quite highly ranked in the support staff hierarchy. Something about me did not agree with her and she wasn't shy about it - I felt attacked without cause and was glad that I didn't react in anger, but I spent the rest of the summer avoiding her.
how friendly is the law profession for non US citizens
Posted July 30th, 2008 by svethasHi,
I am neither a U.S citizen nor a green card holder. I am currently unemployed as I am on a dependent visa (H-4) which does not allow me to work. I hold a B.S degree in Molecular Biology and a M.S degree in Nutrigenomics and would like to become a lawyer. Although intellectual property is what I am inclined towards right now, I might change my specialization based on my experiences at law school. I have a few questions that I am trying to find answers for before I apply to law schools. They are:
Is Hiring a Nanny Expected?
Posted July 23rd, 2008 by bangalee57Today at my internship, the partner I have been working with advised me that as a new associate, I would be expected to hire a nanny to care for my child so I could work late as the job demanded. She began her career at a large firm, married, with a son. Another partner at my firm described working in a large firm as indentured servitude. She also is married and has a teen daughter.
Advice on Starting and Maintaining a Part-time Solo Practice and Finding a Mentor
Posted June 30th, 2008 by tjbookHello:
I am an attorney who decided to embrace the legal field after 13 years of teaching. Currently, I am an assistant director at a major university and am trying to start a part-time solo practice. My hours are flexible. I am also a volunteer attorney for a local consumer law clinic and a member of the local and state bar associations.
To wear pantyhose or not to wear pantyhose
Posted June 25th, 2008 by AdversePossessionOK, so what you wear is a stupid thing to worry about, but the thing is that I have many skirt suits, and I wanted to know - is it too unprofessional to wear a skirt with no pantyhose in the office? If I ever appeared in court I would wear them, but I HATE pantyhose, and so I don't want to wear them everyday. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate it.
Benefit of an LLM?
Posted May 7th, 2008 by BrooketerryHi everyone,
I've been seriously considering pursuing an LLM after law school, but I don't know anyone else that has earned one, so it is hard to find any helpful advice. Does anyone know how favorably they are viewed in the workplace? Do they significantly increase your pay or prestige? If it doesn't pay off in the short term, will it in the long term? Is it an effective tool in directing your carrer in the way that you want?
When should I tell my firm that I'm pregnant?
Posted April 22nd, 2008 by slh245I am a 3L about to take the Bar this July, and I plan to start my job with a V50 firm in August. I found out that I am pregnant a few weeks ago, and my baby will be due in mid-November, just about 2 1/2 months after I start. When should I tell the firm? Should I take the full 12 weeks of maternity leave that they offer? Will the fact that I am taking leave 2 months after starting cause them to give me less important or interesting work? Do you think they will tell me to push back my start date until after the baby is born? Any other advice?
Opportunity to be reinvented after 50
Posted March 20th, 2008 by surphetteTo make a long story short, three years ago my husband of 20 plus years decided to trade me in for two 20 year olds. I returned to school and I will finish my BS in Paralegal Studies at the end of April.
Im 30, looking to change career to law, am I crazy?
Posted February 20th, 2008 by Techie2022Hi, I recently reached a turning point in my life. I have always been interested in a career in law - after my undergrad, I applied and got into a local school. Due to financing issues- I had to decline the offer.
So, long story short I found myself in Information security- where I have been for the past 8 or so years. I have attended a number of conferences where they talk of shortages with "tech lawyers" - especially as the field continues to grow.
