Have you been obsessively watching the Olympics? Even when you've already read the spoiler and know how it turns out?  We highly recommend this story about someone called "The Flying Housewife" and what it was like for the women who competed in the last Olympics Games in London in 1948.

The Olympics also have us revisiting some tricky questions about what makes a woman a woman for purposes of women's sport, when the science tells us that gender is on a spectrum and it's not so black and white.

    This week's Ms. JD: She Leads leadership article of the week is Marissa Mayer's 9 Principles of Innovation.  It's an article the newly-minted CEO of Yahoo wrote when she was VP of Search Products and User Experience at Google.  Check it out!  In conference news, registration will open shortly so be on the lookout!

    In the crazy world of legal ethics and attorney advertising (too soon for those of you who just took the bar?!?), the ABA Journal reports that lawyers need to watch out for those reviews on Google Places

    New lists are out for those of you who tweet and would like to follow a few Law Profs.  Interestingly, more profs on twitter are male by about a 1:3 ratio

    A death penalty case you should know about: an OR prisoner argues that the Governor's moratorium on the death penalty should not apply to him.

      First Yahoo announced the selection of Marissa Mayer as CEO - she'll be the first person to ever hold that tiel while pregnant in the history of the Fortune 500

      Then, the New York Times picked Margaret Sullivan as Public Editor

      Lest we get too excited, this week also brought the sobering news that 80% of new jobs are filled by men and a sobering picture of the persistent gender wage gap

      The ABA is building a Diverse Speaker Database - submit your name or that of a speaker you recommend by August 31

      This week in the Anne Marie Slaughter Aftermath: a rejoinder to the "Having-It-All-Debate" from a member of Gen Y and a thoughtful piece on how the Marissa Mayer pregnancy announcement has reignited the debate (example of said re-igntion available here)

      The Senate is voting to fill judicial vacancies this month - but will it move the dial towards parity?

      As we continue to prepare you for Ms. JD: She Leads, we offer you a leadership article a week.  This week, Forbes explains "The 6 People You Need In Your Corner" (complete with diagrams!).  It's an interesting way to think about who you need on your personal board of directors. 

        Ms. JD Weekly Round-up: Week Ending July 13, 2012

        We're continuing to offer you a leadership article a week in preparation for our She Leads Conference Oct. 5th in Washington DC.  This week, let's look at law firm leaders (a.k.a. rainmakers).  The National Journal Law Journal reports on what it takes to become a rainmaker.  (Hint: It takes time, a lot of time!)

        The Glass Hammer reports that, yet again, that the "Opt-Out" excuse (that women opt-out of top level positions to meet family demands) is nothing more than a myth.

        For those of you interested in teaching, Yale Law is now offering a Law PhD program aimed at students who want to be professors.

        Also, Forte has decided to help corporate America identify board ready women by creating a list.  So much for the "we can't find her" excuse!
