News about Ms. JD's Fifth Annual Conference on Women in the Law!

Ms. JD is excited to be sharing an update about our Fifth Annual Conference on Women in the Law, Ms. JD: She Leads. As you may remember from our save the date, Ms. JD has partnered with the Women and the Law Program at Washington College of Law at American University to host the conference October 5, 2012. Ms. JD's annual conference represents the marquee event of the year for women in law. In addition to getting the opportunity to interact with and learn from one another, the conference gives students and young lawyers opportunities to meet top lawyers, hear from incredible and inspiring speakers, and plan for a year ahead working together! In sum, She Leads will present students and attorneys with a meaningful and valuable opportunity to connect to the nation's most talented people in the law.

Ms. JD: She Leads will feature a full day of programming on Friday, October 5, 2012. The conference is designed to help participants develop their leadership skills which can be applied in a law school setting, in legal practice, government, or non-profits. Our sessions promise to be exciting, dynamic, and informative.

Thus, Ms. JD proudly presents the Ms. JD: She Leads session lineup:

Women on Law Review: A Gender Diversity Report

Ms. JD collected self-reported gender diversity data from general interest law reviews at the 2009 U.S. News “Top 50” law schools for the 2008-2010 academic years.  The results show that while overall percentages of women members of these law journals (44.3%) and women in leadership positions (46.2%) correlates strongly to the number of women awarded law degrees during the same time period (45.7% in 2008), the number of women editors-in-chief is disproportionately low (33%).

More information about the methodology of the data collection and the import of these findings is contained in the report.  Ms. JD plans to follow up this initial research with a survey of 2010-2011 law review staffs, asking not just for gender breakdowns, but also for the number of women of color serving on staff and in leadership as well as information on the staff and editor selection process.
