Kids are great negotiators. The reason: they have so little control over what happens in their lives. Out of necessity, they get really good at sticking up for themselves - almost too good.
Me: You need to eat your vegetables before you can be done with dinner.
Daughter: But I don’t like vegetables.
Me: They are an important part of your nutrition.
Daughter: Do I have to eat the tomatoes? Tomatoes are disgusting. (fake gagging noise)
Me: No, you can eat the carrots and peppers instead.
Daughter: How about just the carrots?
Me: That’s fine.
Daughter: How many do I have to eat?
Me: Four carrots.
Daughter: Is that just to be done with dinner or can I have dessert too?
Me: Four carrots to be done; six if you want dessert.
Daughter: How about just one?
Daughter: Okay, three. Can I have ice cream?
Ruthless! I’ve learned a few things from my kids about negotiating.
