A Real OnRamp
By Karen Deschaine • January 16, 2014•Firms and the Private Sector

I just learned of a new initiative, called the OnRamp Fellowship, that seems like an amazing program for women lawyers wanting to return to the law firm workforce after taking a break.
I can't tell you how many programs I've read about over the years dedicated to helping women gain the necessary skills to return to lawyering after having stepped out of the profession for a period of time. All of these programs have seemed to me to have great objectives, good seminars and talks and interesting participants, speakers, mentors and champions. However, I have always wondered whether they work or actually get results.
Well, finally, it seems a group has come together to make something happen in this arena -- I love it when people make stuff happen and when firms that say that they are committed to supporting women actually put their money where their mouth is, as they say. And... four firms seem to be doing just that, Cooley (disclaimer: this is my firm), Baker Botts, Sidley Austin and Hogan Lovells. Each of these firms is participating in the 2014 pilot program and offering paid fellowships. Yay!
Now, ladies if you know somebody or some people that might be interested in this opportunity, please spread the word. I'm not sure that there is anything like this out there and I would love for this opportunity to find its way to the best candidates out there. The deadlines for applications and interviews are coming up shortly.
