What Stronger Together Means to Ms. JD Board Member Courtney Gabbara

Ms. JD is hosting its Seventh Annual Conference on Women in the Law: Stronger Together on March 5 & 6, 2015 at UC Hastings College of the Law. In the lead up to our annual conference, Ms. JD board members, staff, and annual conference participants will share what our conference theme “Stronger Together” means to them.

To me, stronger together means . . .recognizing that there is still a lot of ground to cover for women in the legal profession, but that collectively, we can continue to excel by being each other’s champions!

I’m a member of the following professional organizations, which have demonstrated to me that there is strength in numbers . . .

  1. Ms. JD
  2. The Oakland County Bar Association
  3. The Ingham County Bar Association
  4. The American Bar Association
  5. The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan
  6. Grand River Connection (This is a local, young-professional organization that encourages community involvement and networking. There are a ton of benefits and opportunities to be gained by getting to know professionals outside of the legal profession.)

My mentor(s) taught me . . .to believe in myself, to trust my instincts, and to take chances. When things don’t go your way, reflect and move forward.

My mentee(s) taught me . . . to invest in myself and to jump outside of my comfort zone! It is easy to let yourself get comfortable where you’re at personally and professionally. My mentees remind me to push myself, to remember my potential, and to not settle.

Before, during and after this year’s conference, I’d like to help members of Ms. JD’s network by. . . offering to assist students interested in attending law school, by working with those considering pursuing a JD-preferred career, and by stealing a move from Liz Hague and organizing a Detroit or Lansing, Michigan based happy hour for Ms. JD networking! If I can be of any help, please feel free to reach out to me at
