Ms. JD Celebrates Six Wonderful Years with a New Generation of Leadership
By Ms. JD Editor • March 04, 2012 •Features
Six years ago, women from twelve law schools around the country met at Stanford Law School to start a conversation. We shared a vision to connect women law students and support one another to reach ever greater heights within the legal profession. Ms. JD was born. It has been our great privilege to serve on the Board of Directors of Ms. JD since its inception. Ms. JD is more than an organization, it is a community. As a community, we’ve expanded from a blog and a dream to create a range of programs including the National Women Law Students Organization, the only national…

Frank Kimball: Ms. JD’s Champion
By Karen Deschaine • November 01, 2011 •Features
The entire Ms. JD team is deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend, Frank Kimball, and our hearts go out to his family and friends. As young women in the law we've heard countless times about the importance of having a champion -- somebody who is more than a mentor, somebody who is invested in your success. Frank was Ms. JD's champion. He mentored her, helped her, guided her and looked out for her. However, more than that he invested some of his personal success in her success. He really cared about her and went above and beyond in giving of…
On Friendship and Football: Memories of Frank Kimball
By Keisha Stanford • October 30, 2011 •Features
This weekend, I was saddened to learn that the profession lost one of its greatest members, Frank Kimball. Frank’s love of Michigan football and his support for Ms. JD were unwavering. He will truly be missed.I first met Frank at Ms. JD’s 2009 Conference, Avenues to Advancement, held at Northwestern Law School in Chicago, Illinois. I’m not sure how it happened, but Frank and I ended up discussing our mutual love for college football, and a friendship was born. After the conference, Frank would periodically email me, sharing words of wisdom and advice to a young lawyer trying to navigate…
Two Confessions, Two Things I Didn’t Know, and Two Bar Exam Tips
By Janet Wallace • July 06, 2011 •Features, Bar Exam
A confession: on the first essay on the first day of the California Bar Exam, I spent 20 minutes writing on the completely wrong area of law. As in: the question was, quite clearly, about torts, and I was writing a criminal law essay. A confession: on the last performance test on the last day of the California Bar Exam, I had no idea what one of the five questions was even asking of me. As in: when I got to the question, I was baffled. What was the question even getting at? My Bar experience was bookended by two terrible moments.…

By Keisha Stanford • June 16, 2011 •Features
Next week, Ms. JD and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP will host a reception in New York City to celebrate the launch of the Ms. JD Global Education Fund and to help raise funds for its two inaugural scholars, Ugandan law students Joaninne Nanyange and Monica Athieno. Sadly, I will not be able to make the trek to the East Coast to attend what promises to be a wonderful event in honor of a worthy cause. However, when offered the chance to interview the keynote speaker, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, I jumped at the opportunity. But you’ll have to attend the June…
A Year Later: Reflections on Studying for the Bar Exam
By Janet Wallace • June 13, 2011 •Features, Bar Exam
Ed. Note: This summer, back by popular demand, Ms. JD is pleased to feature a series of posts on bar exam prep. The series will include some of our most highly-read articles from past years, as well as new content for all those taking on the bar exam challenge. Good luck! Just one year ago [now three years ago--wow!], my law school class and I were studying for the California Bar Exam--sitting through BARBRI lectures, cursing timed essays, and spending hours in coffee shops drinking espresso and making flashcards (and complaining). For those of you currently studying, I've collected a few bits of advice, one…
Studying for the Bar Exam: Three Outlines
By Janet Wallace • December 02, 2010 •Features, Bar Exam
Editor's Note: This summer, back by popular demand, Ms. JD is pleased to feature a series of posts on bar exam prep. The series will include some of our most highly-read articles from past years, as well as new content for all those taking on the bar exam challenge. Good luck! Last spring, I met with a newly minted attorney who shared with me this tip for passing the California Bar Exam: Start with a long outline and reduce, reduce, reduce. She suggested that I make an outline for each subject and reduce each outline to no more than ten…
