Creating Pathways to Success for All: Advancing and Retaining Women of Color in Today’s Law Firms

Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia

Through panel discussions and facilitated breakout sessions, participants in the Summit looked critically at the combined effects of gender and race or ethnicity that face our colleagues who are women of color. Through the collective efforts of the diverse stakeholders in attendance, the Summit identified that women of color face many of the same issues as white women. However, the barriers are more pronounced for women of color because they also struggle with additional stresses caused by exclusion from formal and informal networks that help ensure success in law practice, and the pressure of being the standard bearer for women of color who follow.
