The talent shortfall is real. Opinions about colleges and careers are formed in middle and high school. Research commissioned on behalf of the Deloitte U.S. Firms by Deloitte Services LP’s Next Generation Initiatives group reveals that young people are making career decisions earlier than ever before. For many, college plans are well established by the age of 12. Almost half of 12- to 14-year-olds have already started to seriously think about their career, and by the time they are 17 to 18 years of age, they are locked into a career path.
This research on the current U.S. high school population provides a glimpse into just how tight the labor market could become if we don’t begin now to create more interest in careers related to accounting and business consulting. Competition in the talent marketplace will be fiercer than it is today. We need to find ways to interest students in accounting and business consulting careers before they enter college.
