Women of the Courts Symposium: Women Chiefs: Shaping the Third Branch

Judith Kaye

In that this symposium centers on Women of the Courts, I will begin with the most startling development I have seen in all my years - women chief judges. As of this writing, women lead the highest court in 19 of the 56 jurisdictions that comprise the Conference of Chief Justices (the states, District of Columbia, territories and commonwealths of the United States). Imagine that - today nearly one-third of this nation's state court chiefs are women! ... Rising numbers represent justice, especially for a system that claims that name and role for itself. Our profession, like our society, is simply fairer, better, and stronger when there is equal opportunity to succeed based on merit.
