The Inside Scoop: The Cons

Have you ever completely and totally forgotten to do something that is important to you? Just totally spaced it out like it wasn't even on your radar? If not - well done. I'm completely envious. If so - welcome to the club. Come sit next to me. I am mortified to admit that I have forgotten this past weeked both to blog for Ms. JD and also to attend choir rehearsal at my synogogue. These are two things that keep my creative juices flowing. They make me happy. And yet somehow I became so engrossed in my day-to-day that I…

The Inside Scoop: Memory Lane

This weekend I'm in beautiful Ithaca, New York celebrating my 15th law school reunion. I haven't been back to Cornell since the day I graduated. I'm so excited to see the town, visit my favorite haunts, and see some dear friends from back in the day. A lot has changed there, of course. New buildings, new professors, new courses. And a lot has changed for the class of 2000 as well: obvious things like marriages, children, and homes, and the less obvious maturity, wisdom and grace. While reminiscing about my law school days this week, I've also been thinking about…

The Inside Scoop: Endless Possibilities

I am interrupting my regularly scheduled blog post to bring you breaking news regarding the New England Patriots: they are CHEATERS. (Full disclosure: I am a Denver Broncos season ticketholder and have hated the Patriots for longer than I can recall.) Please allow me to go off the rails a bit this month, as I just have to get this off my chest. If you're not a sports fan, do NOT stop reading now. This post will have practical application, legal weight, and career value. Pinky swear.  Quick background: for anyone who is not a football fan, or who doesn't have one living…

As I promised last month, I’m going to give you my thoughts on being an in-house attorney, but I’m also going to share what I’ve learned about juggling your personal life with your legal life as you plow ahead in your career. Sticking with the Valentine theme for the month of February, let’s chat about your legal life as a newlywed. Let me share a little bit about my newlywed life to give you some perspective. The Inside Scoop: How do I get there?

Hi! My name is Jenn and I’m so thrilled to be writing to all of you. My column title is “The Inside Scoop” and, as the description promises, I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned in my career while working towards becoming in-house counsel and juggling my personal life along the way. I’m planning to take you along with me on a trip down memory lane: being a newlywed, a new associate, pregnancy and new motherhood at work, stepping up the game as a midlevel, dealing with childcare issues, you get the idea. Most of all, I want to give you my…

Midlife Awakening

I’ve been an attorney for 14 years. During that time, I’ve been at three different law firms, had one amazing clerkship at a state Supreme Court, and landed my “dream job” as in-house counsel a little over two years ago. Yet at several points along this slow and steady rise I’ve daydreamed about doing something completely different. Being a professor, teaching high school, going back to school to get a music degree, among many, many others. I always attributed those daydreams to lack of satisfaction in my current job. Maybe I really hated a project I was working on, or I was being…
