What Stronger Together Means to Ms. JD Board Member Liz Vaysman
By Liz Vaysman • December 15, 2014 •Ms. JD, Conference
To me, stronger together means . . . Being surrounded by intelligent, caring, and motivational people that are on your team. This includes men and women, friends and family, and professional colleagues. Remember that this means you are on their team too! I’m a member of the following professional organizations, which have demonstrated to me that there is strength in numbers . . . I’m going to sidetrack a bit from this question. Aside from professional organizations, I've experienced "strength in numbers" through other avenues. I regularly take classes at a fitness studio where there is a wide range of ages and careers. It…
The Rule of 8: Gaining Control of the Unknowns
By Liz Vaysman • October 30, 2014 •Careers, Other Career Issues, Law School, Choosing a Career and Landing a Job, Issues, Other Issues
Before heading to college, my best friend's dad gave us some advice. He said you will succeed as long as you follow the 8/8/8 rule - 8 hours of school, 8 hours of play, and 8 hours of sleep. I followed these rules to a "T" in college and it paid off. I was able to balance academic productivity with health and maintain a social life. Of course sometimes I strayed off course, but for the most part, this worked. Now, 8 years after starting college, I'm realizing that I need to set some similar guidelines for myself. I've been in…

The Myth of 3L
By Liz Vaysman • October 30, 2013 •Law School
We’ve all heard the saying: 1L they scare you to death, 2L they work you to death, and 3L they bore you to death. I don’t know about the rest of the 3Ls out there, but I am not bored. If anything, I am more scared than 1L and work more than 2L. Aside from courses and clinic, involvement in activities, professional development, and god-forbid, personal time, there is a major weight put on 3L: the job hunt. I’m not going to list methods I have tried or am trying, or how hard I think this year is with the…
Cruise Control: Passion Forward
By Liz Vaysman • September 30, 2013 •Features
To be perfectly honest, I’m still on the journey to find my passion. As we all know, figuring it out is not easy, and for those who have figured it out, we don’t believe them or are incredibly envious. One thing’s for sure – Ms. JD has directed me through this on-going journey.I became involved with Ms. JD in 2012 as the conference coordinator for She Leads, Ms. JD’s Fifth Annual Conference on Women in the Law. I took this position to earn some extra money over the summer. I was my sister’s maid of honor and as you can…
“What I wish I would have known” with author Susan Smith Blakely
By Liz Vaysman • June 03, 2013 •Careers
Last week I had the opportunity to hear Susan Smith Blakely, author of the Best Friends at the Bar books for young women lawyers, give career advice to a group of eager young professionals, including both men and women at the LadiesDC happy hour. Susan emphasized the importance of helping all women succeed in business and how the best way to that is to craft Personal Definitions of Success. During the event, I was able to steal Susan away for a few moments for a short interview on what she wished she would have known through various phases of her…
