Mommy Law:  Lesson Learned

Have you ever noticed how sometimes you have to teach a child the same lesson several times before it really sticks?  Recently I was reminded that this truism applies to ME too. Many years ago I got my first job working as an assistant for a volunteer program.  In between photocopying and phone calls to volunteers, I chatted with my boss about life.  Most days she had some little nugget of wisdom to offer me.  One time I mentioned that I was feeling overwhelmed about getting started on a big project for school.  Her response was. . .well, obvious: “You’ve…

Mommy Law: The Gift

I am currently enjoying one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. I have 10 weeks off from my career. No school. No work. The only commitments I have are family and “catch up” time. I took the California Bar Exam at the end of July. Then I spent August traveling and hosting out-of-town guests, and the entire month flew by in what felt like seconds. Now I have September to focus on getting life up and running for myself, my daughter, and the rest of my family. You might be wondering what I could possibly be doing with…

Mommy Law: Three Years in Review

I have spent the last three years juggling law school and family life.  For much of the time it was a really great experience.  For all of the time it was challenging.  And for a small portion of the time it felt like a truly impossible undertaking.  The tone of my “law school experience” was set on the very first day of Orientation Week.  I was nervous.  Everybody around me seemed nervous.  My fellow classmates and I were herded out of the law school and into a nearby auditorium for a mandatory presentation.  Instead of parading in with everybody else,…

Mommy Law:  It’s time to ask “the Question”

When is the RIGHT time to have a child? This is the question that has frequently been on my mind in the last few weeks. As I wrote my last column I decided to do a little advanced preparation for this post. I started asking people “the Question” just to see what sort of answers I might get. I was amazed by how quickly the answers came, particularly from people who hadn’t started a family yet. It was clear that many of the people I asked about the “right” time to have a child had already given it a tremendous amount…

Mommy Law: Pretend Play and Balancing Games

My daughter had several dolls lined up on an oversized chair, and she was pretending to tuck them in.  She arranged a blanket over the dolls, making adjustments and patting them on the head as she worked.  She asked how they were feeling and reassured them that she would take good care of them.  Then all of a sudden my daughter sat up very straight.  She said in the sweetest of voices, “Wait just a minute, I’ll be right back.”  She hurried over to a nearby wall as she explained, “Don’t worry. I just have to take care of one…

Mommy Law: Watch Those Corners!

“I arrived exactly on time and went inside. Within minutes, a nanny came running in as another nanny went running out. It was probably time for a shift change. I entered the house and headed to the music room. Three of the daughters came bounding in to show me their guinea pig, and I could hear the youngest daughter singing upstairs. Since the parents didn't come to greet me, I knew they were still at work. I began the piano lessons as usual.” This was my life before law school. I ran a piano studio. I taught oodles of lessons…
