The Journey Through Law School is Just the Start

Dear Friends in the Law,

Wow! This is my last blog post with you. The year has flown by, and I have enjoyed our time together. Hopefully, you find some downtime this summer before starting (or continuing) your legal studies.

And while I sincerely hope that you stay in touch via LinkedIn or otherwise, I wanted to leave you with some parting words. I daresay words of wisdom, though I hope you do take these words to heart.

The most important part of your professional journey is NOW. You won’t get the time back and time just keeps moving forward. That being said, your professional journey in the legal field is just beginning.

Think of what this means to you. You came to law school or will be entering law school with education, talents, skills, and the opportunity to grow. You can take charge of your learning and goals, even when the road ahead is not clearly defined. You already have accomplished so much, and will continue to take on more information, develop expertise, and hone skills you have yet to achieve. Treat each phase as important, as you are building your brand, and more importantly, your reputation. Think of how much you already know and you will move forward accomplishing great things.

Learn from the past, plan for the future, live in the presence of now.

Additionally, and I appreciate that what I say next may be controversial as a career adviser, don’t live to work. Absolutely work hard. Hustle, especially as you break into your new career of law. Make sacrifices that are needed in order get things done.

BUT. Be mindful of where your energy is going on a day-by-day basis. Set boundaries and take breaks. Call your mom. Walk your dog. Take that spin class.

We only get one body—treat yours well. Live authentically and fully; don’t let work consume all your waking (and even sleeping) hours.

Be open to career changes and trying new things in the law. As I have said before, a JD gives you so much freedom to explore. As such, your career may take you a path you haven’t even thought of yet! That being said, make smart choices. Don’t hop from job to job, purely chasing a larger salary or opportunity. Make strategic choices and be thoughtful if and when you leave a position.

The legal field is a small one and keeping a sterling reputation is key. Advancement is important, and making meaningful connections is essential.

Most of all, be true to yourself. Being a lawyer is a profession and an identity. But it’s only a part of you. Use your new profession to be a good attorney, set your sights on being an ethical advocate, and maintain your morals. You will be tested in life; be true to your core values.

I wish you all the success in the world. And maybe more than ever, we need good future lawyers like YOU. The journey is beginning—enjoy the ride and the destination.
